FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Q:
Why have a fire risk assessment?
A:
It has been the law since October 2006, without an assessment you may not be
legally compliant and your business is unlikely to be insured for fire.
Q:
Why can’t I do it myself?
A:
You can, if you have the time and expertise to do it. But for an untrained
person a fire-risk assessment can be time consuming and might not meet legal
requirements. You may want to leave it to the professionals.
Q:
Why choose Fire Key?
A:
All our assessors hold the Fire Prevention Association's Fire-Risk
Assessment certificate and undertake Continual Professional Development
annually.
Q:
What is a fire-risk assessment?
A:
A fire-risk assessment evaluates your premises in terms of fire safety
hazards (both for people and property) then documents the results and
provides a management report to ensure you meet all your legal requirements.
Q:
How long does an assessment take?
A:
The site visit is usually completed within a day. Once completed, you will
be provided with a management report detailing all significant findings and
highlighting any areas of non-compliance.
Q:
Could I be inspected at any time?
A:
Inspections may be unannounced and an inspector may enter premises to
inspect the premises, ask about the identity of the Responsible Person, and
inspect or copy Fire Safety Records.
Q:
Who is responsible for enforcing fire safety regulations?
A:
The Enforcing Authority will ordinarily be a Fire Inspector from the local
Fire and Rescue Service. In special cases the HSE or Local Authority may
also be involved.
Q:
What actions can be taken by the enforcing authority?
A:
Failure to comply with the Fire Safety Order may result in legal action
resulting in a fine or up to two years imprisonment.
Q:
What type of businesses must undertake a fire-risk assessment?
A:
All business premises must undertake a Fire-Risk Assessment, however, if you
employ 5 persons or more your risk assessment must be documented and
available for inspection.
